The hearing test

How do I get the best results?

Take the test somewhere quiet, with the headphones you'll listen on. Set the volume before you start and leave it there: if it changes, Spex pauses and asks you to put it back. Answer "No" whenever you're not sure you heard the beeps.

Is this a medical hearing test?

No. Spex measures what you hear on your headphones so it can tune your music. It isn't a medical device and doesn't diagnose hearing loss. If you're worried about your hearing, see a hearing professional.

Headphones and profiles

Do I need a test for each pair of headphones?

For the best sound, yes. Headphones sound different from one another, so Spex keeps a profile for each pair and switches to the right one when they connect.

Do my profiles move to a new iPhone?

Yes. Profiles are kept in your iCloud account, so they appear on any device signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud turned on for Spex.

Purchases

What's free, and what isn't?

The hearing test, your profiles, the demo songs and the Strength slider are free. Playing your own music comes with a 7-day free trial, then a one-time unlock. There's no subscription.

How do I restore my purchase?

Open Spex on a device signed in to the Apple Account you bought it with. Spex finds the purchase by itself; if it doesn't, choose Restore Purchases on the screen where you unlock Spex.

Syncing songs from your Mac

How does it work?

In Spex on your Mac, select a folder and click its iPhone button. Its songs copy to Spex on your iPhone over Wi-Fi, in the same folders, whenever Spex is open on both and they're on the same network.

My iPhone doesn't find my Mac.

Why does syncing pause when I listen on Bluetooth?

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth share a radio band, so copying while you listen on Bluetooth headphones can make the sound drop out. Syncing picks up a moment after you stop. You can turn this off in Spex's Settings under Sync from Mac.
